Modern Surf Fishing Rods Selection

Surf fishing rods are strong 1 piece or 2 piece outfits designed either for use with spinning or multiplying reels.

1 or 2-piece

Most of today’s surf rods are 2-piece, although a small number of surf anglers swear by 1-piece rods arguing that they are better for casting and so on. The argument will never end; it is a matter of personal preference and opinion.

But performance-wise I found them both are equally good. The choice is yours. Remember that 2-piece rods are easy to portage and storage.

For a surf angler the most important thing is to be able to cast far out over the surfs to put his bait and terminal tackle in deeper water where the bigger fishes are. Today, with advance materials and technology even the cheapest surf tackle offers reasonable casting power if all you want to do is cast 100 yards or so.

Surf fishing rods are large, heavy-duty, and medium to fast action spinning or bait-casting rods. Because they are needed for greater casting distances – up to more than 100 yds into the surf from the shore combined with a heavy lure or bait and sinker — 4-8 ozs or even heavier.

Latest Trends

The latest trends are surf-spinning rods made of graphite or graphite composite with a fast-tip action. Graphite rods are best compared to other materials because they are light, excellent casting qualities and much more sensitive which are very important for surf fishing.

Handles

Surf rods are designed with long handles to give good leverage on the cast and allowing the use of both hands. Most handles today are made of synthetic which are far better to grip than cork, often called Hypalon, Cellite, Eva, and others.

Reel Seats

Most of the common reel seats are made of lightweight, high-quality graphite or stainless steel. Some rods are fitted with an adjustable reel seat to fit the casting position of the angler. I found that the ideal position is about 30 inches from the butt-cap to the centre of the reel-fitting.

Guides

The guides for these purpose rods must be big and strong. And you also need guides that are non-corrosive to have friction-free for smooth and accurate long distance casts. The common guide ring materials available include titanium oxide, stainless steel and ceramics.

Rod Length

Rod length varies from 7-14 feet or much longer but very seldom shorter. The common ranges are 8-12 feet. For most situations a medium-fast action rod about 10 feet long, a medium-size reel able to hold 200 meters of 15-20 lbs test line and 30-40 lbs leader to take the shock of the cast, makes up a well-matched outfit.

When it comes to the choosing of surf fishing rods, look for one that is well suited to the type of surf fishing you intend to do. It is pointless to select a strong and powerful rod that can cast the distance and heavy sinkers when what you are after are only small fishes in a bay or estuary.
