Learn about Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Smallmouth bass fishing is one of the most popular freshwater fishing sports in the U.S.A.

The main reason behind its popularity is its fighting ability. Pound for pound no other freshwater sport fish can match this exciting acrobatic bass.

Many large lakes, reservoirs and rivers in the U.S.A. due to introduced stocks hold large numbers of this impressive freshwater gamefish.

Habitat

Smallmouth bass can be found in clear-cool waters, still or flowing, with rocky bottoms. But they are seldom found in murky and weed-infested waters. They prefer shady covers like rocks and boulders as well as structures like fallen trees. Most serious bass anglers fish for them with their own powerful bass fishing boats.

Diet

Although they eat anything that move around them, crayfish and small baitfish are their favorite diet. They will also eat worms, insects, larvae, leeches and shrimps.

Tackle

Tackle for “smallie” fishing as they are sometimes called are often light or ultra-light, because when hooked, they fight in open water than rushing into covers and obstacles. Outfits from 4-8 lbs. are often more than enough to do the job well.

As for baits, smallmouth bass can be caught with natural baits or artificial lures.

Natural Baits

Worms, crayfish and minnows are some of the most effective natural baits to lure these highly predatory fish.

Fishing Rigs

Various rigging methods are employed by bass anglers. The most popular methods are the bottom-bouncing rig for moving water situation and the simple float-rig often used on still water.

Artificial Baits

The number of bass fishing lures is huge, as you can notice in most serious bass anglers’ tackle boxes. Good e.g. are flies, spinners, spoons, crankbaits, jigs, poppers and soft plastic lures.

And there is no such thing of a particular super lure that catch lot of fish, and work for all situations. Don’t be fooled by some advertising you see somewhere. I hope that no such thing happen, because if there is such a lure it’ll take away much of the fun of fishing. Anyway, many things need to be considered when come to the choosing of lures, such as the location, the depth, the time of day, the season as well as the different types of waters you are fishing.

Some trials and errors must be anticipated when you are on a smallmouth bass fishing trip using lures as bait. And here are some basic tips you can work with some of them.

Jigs – These lures are effective when smallmouth bass are found in deep-water lakes and reservoirs especially in summer when the water is warmer.

Poppers – These surface lures work best with flowing and shallow water.

Spinners – Spinners are best worked along rocky edges of lakes and rivers with flowing water.

Flies – Fly-fishing with dry flies are the best lures for shallow rivers with flowing water. Wet flies as well as streamer flies are effective for lakes with deeper water.

Crankbaits – This type of lures is very popular for lakes and rivers smallmouth bass fishing. Working with a slow-and-deep retrieve they give an impression of an injured fish on the run.

Soft plastics – These are cheap and extremely productive lures for fishing at all depths. Some are scented and some also glow in the dark which fish can’t resist when fished in the night or in deeper water.

Smallmouth bass fishing is a great experience, a real challenge with the hard-fighting and acrobatic freshwater game-fish. It has being an added pastime to millions of anglers all over the globe. And how about you!
