Kayak Fishing – The Cheapest Way to Fish Afloat on Freshwater or Saltwater

Kayak fishing is getting very popular, especially in countries with warm-climate. Some of the countries like Australia, America and Malaysia have fishing clubs that cater for only this kind of angling.

Modern kayaks are cheap, light, and durable. The cost of maintenance is low. And kayaks are easy to launch. You don’t have to worry about the sky-high price of petrol because they’re not motorized. And without the smell of exhaust fumes and noise, fishing on these water crafts is very relaxing. Without motors and noise they’re environment-friendly and fishes won’t be easily spooked.

They’re easy to use. Paddling is fun and easy. You’ll be surprised that you’ll be able to master it correctly in a couple of minutes into the water. As kayaks only glides on the water they can move pretty fast and smooth with little effort.

As kayak fishing gain popularity, manufacturers are churning out lot of models and designs that are readily available in the market. Fiberglass, inflatable and polyethylene are some of them. By far polyethylene is the most common. They’re light, durable and much easy to use compared to the others. Choose one that you find comfortable with, and one that suit your fishing’s need. They’re kayaks specially designed for fishing inland freshwater, near shore and offshore.

With this kind of fishing, adventures are numerous. You’ll be able to get to places to fish otherwise hard to reach, and catch more fishes than with motorized crafts. The rewards and thrills fishing on these kayaks are simply sensational. Just imagine the fun when you hooked on a fish which is big and aggressive. Angler and kayak will be pulled around, sometimes for great distances. That exactly happens to me, not once but many a time. I’m sure most serious kayak anglers have the same experience too.

If your style of angling is trolling, bait-casting, lure-casting, bottom-fishing, jigging or drifting these kayaks are just marvelous. Though space is limited, modern kayaks are designed with rod holders, nettings, anchors, dry bags and some other necessities. It’s advisable to bring along equipment that you really need so as to minimize space. Shorter rods are preferable over longer rods for better handling.

Although kayaks are very stable and not prone to capsize, safety measures must not be overlooked. Wearing a life jacket is one of them. Anglers must also pay much attention to the tides, wind direction, currents and waves movement. Stand-up fishing on most kayaks is not possible except those built with catamaran-hull models. And choose one with a brightly-painted color so as to avoid collision with fast-moving and bigger motorized water crafts.

The beauty of kayak fishing is aplenty. I hardly has a boring trip even the catch is not up to my expectation. Observing Nature close-up is one of them. At the same time I find myself so fit without having to visit the gym. It’s indeed a great way to fish afloat when it’s only sport fishing that we are after.
