Essential Kayak Fishing Accessories for Your Comfort and Safety

Kayak fishing accessories are aplenty in the market.

As kayak fishing gained popularity manufacturers are creating all sorts of accessories in a fast rate.

Not all kayak accessories are necessary! By going as simple as possible on what you really needed is the best way to rig your kayak -- and with some advantages. Having too many unused items onboard not only is a waste of money, but also hinders precious time to launch your kayak into the water -- as well as many other inconveniences when you are on the water fishing.

A kayak has very little space, so it’s wise not to rush into fitting too many gears too early which later you find are not much use.

Here, below, I have compiled a list of the essential items you need to have to guide you on to the world of kayak fishing:

Lifejacket and Personal Flotation Device (PFD) are the most important things to have even if you are an Olympic swimmer. Be sure to get one which fit you nicely and comfortably to keep you afloat.

Kayak cart – will help you with the transportation of your boat and stuffs to and from the water.

Rod holders – allow your rods to be mounted when not in use.

Compass – is to get you home if you lost your way. But make sure to learn how to use it first.

Knife – must be one which release easily and one which can be attached to your PFD for easy access in case of emergency.

Leashes – are for securing your rods and paddle from dropping into the water.

Dry Bags – are to put away items which you don’t want them to get wet, such as fishing license, camera, cell phone, food stuffs, extra clothing and many others.

Anchor – is not often in use by kayak anglers but still it is a necessity to bring one along with enough length of good-quality rope. One example of use is when one’s rowing against current and one need a rest.

Milk crate – is to keep everything within reach. You be surprised that most of your small kayak fishing accessories can be laid or tighten to this magic box.

VHF radio – must be small, powerful and waterproof.

Cell phone – must be kept close at hand and in dry bag. You can outdate your location, your catch or whatever with someone on land.

Fishing net – is to help you land your catch. It’s advisable to get one which is light with good grip because you need to do it all by yourself.

First-aid box – will definitely comes in handy when you need it most. My tip for plaster is gets one that is spray-type which is waterproof and easy to use, because those normal types won’t hold when one’s wet and sweaty.

Bailer – is not only will helps you to bail-out water from the kayak, but also with your urinal when standing is quite impossible. Mine is always a simple cut-out Coca-Cola plastic bottle.

Written above is only some of the essential kayak fishing accessories which I think are indispensable to make your kayak fishing trips easier and safer. You may add whatever you think is of much use to you – but always bear in mind that space is limited, so rig your kayak with only what is really needed. Wish you have much wonderful time on the water with your kayak!
