Rivers, streams, ponds, reservoirs and lakes are some of the freshwater places where you can fish. If you are living close to any of them a wonderful time await you with exciting fishing, day or night. Often these places offer a variety of species for sport fishing as well as some good quality eating fishes. Bream, catfish, peacock bass, barramundi, carp, bass, pike, salmon and trout are some of the common freshwater fishes.

Some species are easy to catch like bream and catfish but there are some which are very elusive like bass. So, if you’re beginners to this sport and fun is what you want avoid species that are not easy to catch.

Equipment for freshwater fishing is usually very simple and the cost can be quite cheap. It’s quite seldom that you need very special gear or great skill to catch them.

There’re 4 types of freshwater fishing. You can go for bait fishing, lure fishing, pole fishing or fly fishing.

Bait fishing is done with natural or processed bait. Most natural baits are free. Here’re some of them: maggots, mussels, crayfish, shrimps and worms. Worms are very versatile for almost any freshwater species and you can dig them up from your garden’s lawn for free. Bread, cheese, caned meat, nuts, potatoes and vegetables are some of the processed bait. Small live fish are best for predatory fish.

Lure fishing involves casting of artificial lures for predatory fish which is my favorite. You need not have to mess around or source for bait. With lure is clean and fun but some of the lures don’t come cheap. Spoons, spinners, jigs and plugs are some of the artificial lures used for freshwater fishing. The feel of a fish hitting your lure with the rod in your hand is really fantastic. Here’re some of the freshwater species that will grab lures willingly:barramundi, peacock bass, pike and perch.

Pole fishing is the oldest form of fishing. It’s done without a reel. A line is attached at the tip of the rod usually with a float. Modern fishing poles are light, made of fiberglass and long. They are collapsible rods for easy transportation without rings.

Fly fishing is simply beautiful as well as graceful. The equipment is very specialized and different from other kinds of fishing. It is different because you cast the line not the lure. You need much practice for this type of fishing. Before you can catch fish on it you need to master the basic techniques of casting and retrieving a fly. Don’t expect to bring fish for dinner with this type of fishing. Most fly fishermen practice catch and release.

Freshwater fishing is mostly done on the bank or by wading on shallow water. But most of the angling methods can be easily applied on a boat. Whichever way you choose to fish you will have lot of fun with this fascinating sport.
