Fishing License Information

A fishing license or sport-fishing licence is required in many countries that cover fishing, whether you intend to fish in saltwater or freshwater.

Saltwater fishing in much of the world is free, but some countries a license is required. Penalties for fishing without one are often very severe. Make sure to check on the local regulations before going fishing.

Where to apply

Local fisheries management department, post offices, tackle shops, some sporting good stores, fishing lodges, marinas and through the Internet are some of the places you can apply for your valid license.

Fees

The fees for the fishing license are usually very small. Each country has its own fee structure. The amount depends on the duration of the valid document you are applying and also the targeted species. Some special species such as trout and salmon require an additional stamp in addition to the normal license.

Non-residents are usually charged higher fees than residents by most countries.

The money collected goes to the upkeep of fish habitats, restocking and improving fishing opportunities, so it is no big deal for paying the required licenses.

Who do not need one or are given free

In some countries children under certain age and senior citizens are given free licenses to fish. In America those in the military, handicapped people and aborigines are exempted.

Requirements and Regulations

Some countries in Europe such as Germany require an angler to take and pass a test before you can fish. In the United States of America no tests are required in order to obtain a license.

The usual fishing laws require that the angler must carry the signed license while fishing. And present it upon request from a conservation officer or any other authorized law enforcement officers. In some nations the valid license must be prominently displayed above the waist when you are fishing.

After obtaining a license is not all, be aware that there are other regulations that apply to the waters that you intend to fish. Examples such as whether you can keep your catch, bag-limits, close seasons for some species, fishing methods, whether or not you are allowed to chum and so on. Read and understand the regulations booklet before you go fishing. Violators of fishing laws can be dragged to court and pay heavy fines.

The need to obtain and pay a fee for a fishing license before you go out to fish really made sense. Revenue collected from these licenses, stamps and permits is being spent to improve angling opportunities as well as management of fishery resources. And most of all it helps to control recreational anglers comply with recreational angling laws.
